Bunkai: Pinan Yondan – Leg Displacement

Bunkai: Pinan Yondan – Leg Displacement

Techniques which can be interpreted as leg displacements occur in Fukyugata ichi, Pinan Shodan, Pinan Yondan, Rohai, Passai, and possibly in others.

In all of them the opponent steps close to you to trip, strike, choke or throw you.

Here in Pinan Yondan, in this interpretation, you have just applied an elbow strike to an opponent.

A new opponent approaches your exposed left side.

They attempt a guillotine choke, reaching for your neck to throw you backwards and trip you.

You raise your left to block their attempt.

You raise your right to block and chamber for the follow up strike.

You remove your left foot from the attacker’s target area, extending it forward, then making a 90° arc with your foot.

You make contact with your knee at their knee and displace their leg as you turn into kosa dachi.

This turns them, unbalances them, and exposes their neck to a knife hand strike.
