Origin of the title “True Karate Dō”

Sakiyama Sogen Roshi, karate practitioner and abbot of Kozenji Zen temple in Shuri, Okinawa gave the name “True Karate Dō” to an essay by Jeff Brooks, which describes a path of profound karate.

Sakiyama translated that essay into Japanese and circulated it among the karate community on Okinawa.

Jeff Brooks built on the outline in that essay, written in 1995, with the development of Yamabayashi Ryu as practiced in the Mountain Karate dojos.

“One of the best books I’ve read in years, inviting and compelling.

Jeff Brooks moves effortlessly from martial arts to Buddhism to consciousness studies, self-transformation, and related fields in this wide-ranging and Illuminating study that has much to offer both novice explorers and veteran practitioners.

A splendid achievement.”
